When it comes to your next move, time is money. The fewer obstacles your movers run into, the faster the job gets done and the more you save. That's true whether you're moving across Huntington, from Ashland to Charleston, or across the river to Ironton.
After years of moving homes and businesses across the Tri-State, here are the tips that make the biggest difference.
1. Be Fully Packed Before the Crew Arrives
This is the biggest one. If the crew shows up and boxes are still being taped, they're waiting on the clock. Have everything boxed, sealed and labeled the night before. Pick one room or corner for anything that isn't going on the truck so nothing gets loaded by mistake.
2. Clear the Driveway at Both Homes
Make sure the driveway is clear at both the loading and the unloading address. When cars are in the way, the movers either wait for someone to move them or park farther away and carry everything a longer distance. Either way, it adds time. If you're moving into an apartment or a building with limited parking, ask about a loading zone ahead of time.
3. Take Apart Furniture Ahead of Time (If You're Comfortable)
If you feel comfortable doing it before the start time, take the backs off couches and loveseats, take apart bed frames, and remove the tops from dining room tables. These are quick jobs for you the night before, and they save time on moving day.
Not comfortable taking things apart? No problem. Our crews bring power tools and handle disassembly and reassembly as part of the job.
4. Clear a Path Through the House
Movers carrying a dresser or a sleeper sofa need room to move. Walk the route from each room to the front door and clear out rugs, shoes, toys, laundry baskets and anything else in the way. A clear path is faster, and it's safer for your floors, your walls and the crew.
5. Have Exact Directions to the New Place
If there's any doubt about how to find the unloading location, have GPS coordinates or a pinned Google Maps location ready to share. New construction, rural roads, and addresses that don't show up correctly in GPS are common around the Tri-State. A wrong turn with a loaded truck can cost real time.
6. Put Small, Loose Items in Containers
Small loose items take a lot of time to move, especially when there are stairs or long walkways. One trip with a full box is much faster than ten trips carrying odds and ends. Bins, laundry baskets and boxes all work. Just get the small stuff contained.
7. Keep Your Crew Fueled
It's never required, but it does make a difference. On long, hot days, movers' energy drops as the hours drag on and the heavy items keep coming. A little water, a sports drink and a light, healthy snack go a long way toward keeping the crew at full strength through the end of the job.
Want to Save Even More?
If you're comfortable renting and driving your own truck, a labor-only move is often the most affordable option. You handle the truck and we handle the heavy lifting: loading, unloading or both. We do labor-only and full-service moves throughout Charleston, Hurricane, Barboursville, Ashland, Ironton and the rest of the Tri-State.
Frequently Asked Questions
How can I make my move go faster?
Be fully packed before the crew arrives, clear the driveway and walkways at both homes, box up small loose items, and have exact directions to the new address ready. Each of these cuts down on time the movers spend waiting instead of lifting.
Should I take apart furniture before the movers arrive?
If you're comfortable doing it, yes. Removing couch backs, taking apart bed frames and taking tops off dining tables saves time on moving day. If you'd rather not, our crews bring power tools and can handle it for you.
Do I need to provide food or drinks for my movers?
No, it's never required. But on long or hot days, having water, a sports drink or a light snack on hand helps the crew keep their energy up through the heaviest lifting.
Why does the condition of my driveway matter?
Movers want to park the truck as close to your door as possible. If cars are in the way, the crew either waits for them to move or carries everything farther. Both add time to an hourly move.
